Aggressive Dog Training

An aggressive dog is a frightful experience for both the owner feeling he can't control the situation and for innocent people exposed to a foreign dogs aggression. There can be different underlying reasons for a dogs aggression and understanding these reasons to the dogs aggressive behavior is the first step in finding the right measures to get a well behaved dog. For the dog it self it is also important to get rid of the dog aggression as the aggressive dog is usually not a happy dog.

Dominance Dog Aggression

A common reason for dogs aggression comes from a need to establish dominance. The dogs dominance aggression can happen towards family members if the dog hasn't found or accepted his role in the hierarchy. But more likely the aggressive dominance behavior will be directed as aggression towards other dogs or animals. Dogs are pack animals and aggression is a natural way to establish the dogs position in the pack. The dominance related aggression often occurs when the dog doesn't find a strong leader in the family. The dog will try to establish himself as the alpha dog in any possible situation. Enhancing your leadership in the family can help stabilize your dogs aggression.

Territorial Dog Aggression

As common as dogs dominance aggression is dog aggression based on the dogs desire to defend what he considers his territory. In wild nature it was vital for the dog aggressively to defend his territory and his possessions. And although this kind of dog aggression in rare situations can be wanted, the dogs aggression in most cases will be directed towards innocent people and visitors to your family.

It helps to avoid this territorial dog aggression if the dog from an early age is getting used to being around people and are experiencing different people visiting your house. And certainly the more isolated the dog is to other people and dogs, the bigger the risk that he will develop unacceptable territorial dog aggression.

Fear Dog Aggression

Fear in dogs are often redirected in aggression. This kind of fear based dog aggression is often mistakenly seen as offensive dog aggression, as the reason for fear may not be obvious. Signs of fear can be growling, ears pulled back and the tail between the legs. Maybe the dog slowly backs off but if he feels cornered he strikes back and the dog attacks aggressively. This kind of dog aggression can only be avoided by learning the signs of fear in the dog and learning to recognize situations that potentially will provoke this kind of fear dog aggression.

Medical Reasons for Aggression

In most cases the dog aggression is behavioral and the dog can be trained to curb the aggression. In more rare cases there might be medical reasons for the dog aggression. It is also not unusual that female dogs can be aggressive when pregnant or when nursing the puppies. Although this kind of dog aggression is not wanted it should not be medical treated.

With all kinds of dog aggression it is important to be obedience training the dog from an early age. This tightens the bond between you and the dog and the dog learns to accept his position in the family. You are the pack leader and the dog respects you. This helps to curb the typical dominance dog aggression and also the territorial dog aggression. Effective obedience training learns the dog to control himself and follow a command. This helps with all kind of dog aggression
